El candidato del Partido Demócrata para la presidencia de Estados Unidos (EE.UU.), Joe Biden, anunció este martes que la senadora por California, Kamala Harris, será su compañera de fórmula para aspirar a la vicepresidencia del país en las elecciones del próximo 3 de noviembre. "Tengo el gran honor de anunciar que elegí a Kamala Harris, una valiente luchadora por la gente de a pie, y una de las mejores servidoras públicas del país, como mi compañera de fórmula presidencial", dijo Biden en una declaración publicada a través de su cuenta oficial en la red social Twitter.
Biden y Harris asumirán sus candidaturas de manera formal la próxima semana durante la Convención Nacional Demócrata, la cual se desarrollará por videoconferencia desde varios lugares del territorio estadounidense, debido a la pandemia de coronavirus. Por su parte, la senadora Harris tuiteó su primera reacción desde que se hizo conocido el anuncio, en la que aseguró sentirse "honrada" de unirse a Joe Biden "como la candidata de nuestro partido a vicepresidente, y haré todo lo posible para convertirle en nuestro comandante en jefe".
Kamala Harris nació en Oakland, estado de California, en el seno de una familia de inmigrantes. Su madre es originaria de la India y su padre de Jamaica. Creció en un ambiente progresista de la década de 1960, en medio de la lucha por los derechos civiles. Estudió por cuatro años en la Universidad de Howard, y luego se trasladó a la de California, para conseguir un título en Derecho y empezar su carrera en la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito del condado de Alameda.
