Steve Bannon, exasesor del presidente estadounidense Donald Trump, fue arrestado este jueves acusado de cometer fraude electrónico en la recolección de fondos para la construcción del muro fronterizo con México, informó la Fiscalía de Nueva York, pero horas después la Justicia le concedió la libertad bajo fianza.
Bannon compareció con un barbijo y esposado ante un juez de Manhattan de manera virtual desde una celda junto con sus abogados, se declaró inocente y consiguió que le concedieran la libertad bajo una fianza de 5 millones de dólares, con una garantía extra de 1,75 millones en activos, según el canal CNN.
Junto con tres de sus asociados, Bannon, quien supo ser la mano derecha del actual mandatario quedó formalmente imputado de "estafar a cientos de miles de donantes" con una campaña de financiación colectiva por Internet titulada "We Build The Wall" (Nosotros Construimos El Muro) que recaudó más de 25 millones de dólares. De acuerdo con un comunicado difundido por el Departamento de Justicia, la campaña tenía como objetivo recaudar fondos para ayudar Trump a cumplir su promesa de construir una barrera en la frontera con México, pero en cambio Bannon y su equipo se beneficiaron personalmente con el dinero.
Además del exasesor presidencial, los otros acusados son Timothy Shea, quien en mayo fue anunciado como administrador interino de la Administración para el Control de Drogas (DEA, por sus siglas en inglés); Brian Kolfage, un veterano de la guerra de Irak; y Andrew Badolato, precisó la cadena CNBC.
