Boris Johnson, acosado por el escándalo, anunció el jueves que renunciaría como primer ministro británico después de perder drásticamente el apoyo de sus ministros y de la mayoría de los legisladores conservadores, pero dijo que se quedaría hasta que se eligiera a su sucesor.
Cediendo ante lo inevitable mientras más de 50 ministros y asesores gubernamentales renunciaban y los legisladores decían que debía irse, Johnson, aislado e impotente, dijo que estaba claro que su partido quería a otra persona a cargo, pero que su partida forzada fue "excéntrica" y el resultado de "instinto de rebaño" en el parlamento.
"Hoy he designado un gabinete para servir, como lo haré, hasta que se establezca un nuevo líder", dijo Johnson afuera de su oficina en Downing Street, donde sus aliados cercanos y su esposa Carrie vieron su discurso.
"Sé que habrá mucha gente que se sienta aliviada y quizás bastantes que también se sientan decepcionadas. Y quiero que sepan lo triste que estoy por dejar el mejor trabajo del mundo. Pero esos son los descansos". agregó, sin disculparse por los eventos que forzaron su anuncio.
Su mandato terminó con escándalos que incluyeron incumplimientos de las reglas de confinamiento por la pandemia de COVID-19, una lujosa renovación de su residencia oficial y el nombramiento de un ministro que había sido acusado de conducta sexual inapropiada.
