El economista británico del Fondo Monetario Internacional, Ben Kelmanson, comenzará esta semana su nueva posición al frente de la oficina en Buenos Aires, en reemplazo del jamaiquino Trevor Alleyne.
Kelmanson es un economista con 22 años de experiencia en el Fondo, y ha trabajado "en una variedad de asuntos a nivel global y regional y de políticas de la institución para economías avanzadas, de bajos ingresos y emergentes", según detalló el FMI tras la designación.
En este sentido, durante los últimos tres años el economista fue representante permanente del organismo en Turquía. Antes, se desempeñó como economista en Moldavia y Letonia, y además, fue subjefe de Unidad en el Departamento de Europa.
Kelmanson es graduado en la Universidad de Leeds en 1994. Antes de su incorporación al staff del Fondo, trabajó como asesor del Directorio Ejecutivo del Reino Unido en el directorio del FMI y también tuvo un puesto en el Tesoro del Reino Unido.
Kelmanson trabajará para el economista brasileño Ilan Goldfajn, quien la semana pasada asumió como nuevo director para el Hemisferio Occidental en el Fondo Monetario Internacional, el cargo que había dejando vacante el mexicano Alejandro Werner.
Goldfajn, que resultará el responsable técnico de supervisar el acuerdo que se negocie con la Argentina, fue ex presidente del Banco Central de Brasil durante los mandatos de Dilma Rousseff y Michel Temer, es un economista de tilde ortodoxo, y adherente a políticas como las metas de inflación.
"Una cálida bienvenida a Ilan Goldfajn en tu primer día como director para el Departamento del Hemisferio Occidental del FMI", escribió la titular del FMI, Kristalina Georgieva, en Twitter, el día de su estreno en el cargo.
"La profundidad de tus conocimientos sobre la región y el trabajo del Fondo, y tu trayectoria como funcionario y comunicador serán invaluables", agregó la economista búlgara.

En rigor, la isla caribeña es formalmente independiente desde el 30 de noviembre de 1966, hace justo hoy 55 años, pero la nueva decisión implica una transición desde una monarquía a una república, tras cuatro siglos de sumisión a Londres.
La decisión de renunciar a la monarquía y optar por la república se tomó hace ya un año. "Ha llegado el momento de dejar atrás nuestro pasado colonial", anunció entonces la primera ministra, Mia Mottley, que hoy puso en funciones a Mason.

La líder de los socialdemócratas suecos, Magdalena Andersson, fue reelegida este lunes primera ministra por el Parlamento, una semana después de haber sido escogida para esa función y dimitir a las pocas horas por falta de apoyos.
Andersson, la primera mujer en ocupar este cargo en Suecia -era hasta ahora ministra de Finanzas-, fue elegida con 173 votos en contra, 101 a favor y 75 abstenciones, según informó la agencia de noticias AFP.
En Suecia, un Gobierno es aprobado si una mayoría absoluta de 175 diputados no vota en contra.
A menos que se produzca una sorpresa de último momento, la elección cierra la transición del poder socialdemócrata tras la salida del primer ministro Stefan Löfven, que dejó el cargo a principios de mes y a menos de un año de las legislativas de septiembre de 2022.

Desde la creación del cargo en 1876, Suecia nunca ha tenido a una mujer como primera ministra, a diferencia de los otros países nórdicos.
